Following a successful debut season of Step Up: High Water, season 2 received the green light and is gearing up to return on March 20. Even though he already stars in the YouTube Premium series as Sage, Ne-Yo has decided to assist with the soundtrack, where he’s penned three original tracks. The first, “Genesis,” premieres with Billboard on Friday (March 1) below.
“My inspiration for the song was my character Sage’s arc and going back to his beginnings. The music and feel that inspired him to choose music over the streets. He loses his way and has to go back to his roots to find it,” the R&B singer says of crafting the tune to align with his character’s journey in the entertaining series, which chronicles the dancing community in hip-hop.
Step Up: High Water is actually based off the 2006 blockbuster flick of the same name. “The sound of the record is also a bit ‘throwback’ on purpose,” he admits. “Taking it back to the fun and energy of just loving what you’re doing. The lyrics speak directly to what Sage is going through, who he is now and who he needs to remember he was.”
