MESSAGE - FairPlays Not So Silent Auction starts NEXT WEEK!

QUESTION

The broader community is enriched by Black-Owned Businesses' and Independent Radio Stations’ ability to thrive.

Indigenous People's Day is Monday - October 10th!

(Artwork by Tracie Ching ft Deb & Twa-le Abrahamson (Spokane Tribe))

To celebrate Indigenous People's Day - Monday October 10th - nonprofits Amplifier and Nia Tero have created an awareness campaign called “Thriving Peoples. Thriving Places.”

This campaign aims to raise awareness Indigenous Peoples’ Day by highlighting and uplifting the contributions of Indigenous women from the United States, Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines, the Arctic, and other locales working in the fields of climate justice, land rights and education.

In order to tell these stories, they’ve created 13 stunning visual artworks + captions they’re encouraging people to share on social media, or put up as banners or posters, and are sharing music for stations to play on air on the 10th.

If you want to help spread the word you can:

- Share these images and these women’s stories online tagging @niatero + @amplifierart + the artist.

- Play music that’s centering and/or supporting Indigenous Artists.

- Educate folks on Indigenous People's Day is on air.

Black Origins (& Anti Racist Legacy) of Ska

Since the late 1950s Ska steadily evolved from its First Wave roots in Kingston, Jamaica – inspiring musicians across the globe in its second wave in the UK, and finding its way into a more modern, Third Wave inspired sound. Often recognized for its offbeat rhythms and energetic nature, the genre has also provided an enduring legacy of racial harmony thanks in part to its British Second Wave.

This is just a snapshot of how Black musicians have shaped the genre over 60 years, and the impact of its broad influence. Big up to all the selectors out there, and anyone not mentioned here that have contributed their art and kept the spirit of the music alive!

FAIRPLAY + NEW YORK MUSIC MONTH

🗣️Panel alert!

FairPlay and New York Music Month Extended Play, an initiative of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, provides an introduction to some of the inner workings and the importance of NonCommercial Radio to every locality.

Get to know the inner workings and importance of NonCommercial Radio stations, and learn more about the way they serve their communities. We’ll talk about the special relationships these stations have with their audiences, and also focus on what NYC’s Independent Music Community and specifically Non-Commercial Radio stations are doing to fight for awareness around Racial and Social Justice issues beyond the airwaves.⠀⠀

This conversation was inspired by a newly formed nonprofit group called FairPlay made up of radio stations, DJs, record labels, industry folks and activists all over the US that have been meeting weekly to discuss the urgency in combatting racism, addressing these issues, and amplifying BIPOC voices and stories. We’ll be joined by representatives from the organization Public Media For All, along with local flagship Non-Commercial radio stations to talk about the ways they’ve evolved to serve their communities, and some key organizations working to encourage diversity through structural change.⠀
