TikTok Treats, Week Of June 29th

A Weekly Roundup Of Interesting Music Stories From the World of TikTok - This Week, A Look at How TikTok Success Impacts the Billboard Charts

The News:
Audible Treats is excited to work with TikTok, the world’s leading platform for music discovery. Each week, TikTok Treats will bring the platform’s best music stories directly to your inbox.

In a topsy-turvy year for the Billboard charts that has seen more unique number one hits than any year in recent memory, the only constant has been TikTok. The short-form video giant plays an instrumental role in building the momentum that creates a hit song. This week's Billboard Hot 100 chart, for the week ending July 4th, shows the immense impact TikTok virality can have on a song's success.
  • Number one on the Billboard Hot 100 this week is "Rockstar," an infectiously melodic collaboration between chart-conquering superstars DaBaby and Roddy Ricch. Buoyed by the "#ROCKSTAR CHALLENGE," in which TikTok users attempt an expressive dance created by @calegoes, the song from DaBaby's hit album Blame It On Baby inspired over 6 million video creations, including a fitness-themed video from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

  • One of the biggest TikTok success stories of the year is "Savage," the #2-placing, #1-peaking hit from Megan Thee Stallion, which owes much of its rise to users creating unique interpretations of the song's "I'm a savage/Classy, bougie, ratchet" refrain. Its 29 million+ video creations inspired Beyoncé to shout out the platform on her verse on the remix: "Hips Tik Tok when I dance."

  • Coming in at #3 is "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd, another massive former #1 fueled by a viral TikTok challenge. The song inspired over 1.5 million videos for two distinct sounds that users employ in different ways. The first sound samples the intro and gave rise to the "#BlindingLightsChallenge" an aerobic, dab-heavy group dance that caught fire among quarantined families, Zoom classrooms, and TikTok power user Jason DeRulo. The second sound, which highlights the chorus, soundtracks moments of glamour, including trippy makeup tutorials and impromptu Rodeo Drive photoshoots.

  • Enjoying a new peak at #4 on the Hot 100, after topping the Official Chart in the U.K. earlier this year, is breakout rapper Saint JHN and his single "Roses." Originally released in 2016, the song found new life when remixed by Kazakh producer Imanbek in 2019. Powered by its heavily-processed vocal hook and syncopated drop, "Roses" (Imanbek Remix) tore through TikTok to the tune of 3.3 million video creations, inspiring a deceptively difficult hip-swinging dance craze originated by @BryceHall.

  • What's gonna hit number one next? Don't sleep on "Blueberry Faygo," the slow-building hit from Lil Mosey that rose up to #9 on the Hot 100 this week. Already a hit on TikTok with over 2.5 million video creations, "Blueberry Faygo" recently topped Billboard's Rhythmic Songs chart and generates over 930k streams per day on Spotify alone. Another possibility is Jack Harlow’sWhat’s Poppin’” (396k videos), currently at #8, an ultra-confident trap banger suited to soundtrack unexpected “pop-ins” (good or bad).

  • The rest of the Top 10 includes Doja Cat's "Say So" (one of the platform's most popular songs with 20 million creations), and Justin Bieber's "Intentions" ft. Quavo (326k video creations).
TikTok is a powerful tool for artists, capable of doing much more than just raising awareness of a song. Aided by the creativity of the app's users, the platform presents songs in new contexts, offering an engaging look at how music soundtracks our daily lives. With TikTok, songs transform into immersive, expansive universes--a canvas with unlimited avenues for expression. No wonder TikTok users flock to streaming services to play their songs over and over again.
