With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
Central Cee has a knack for opening lines. “Day in the life, let’s see if you really trap,” the rising West London rapper challenged on last year’s “Day in the Life.” “Cee don’t be on the road too tough/But I still cut through with the local thugs,” he brags on October’s “Loading.” His first single of 2021 starts off with a bang as well. “Take that risk and go independent/I just turned down six figures,” he raps on “Pinging (6 Figures).” This isn’t to say that Cee is some kind of lyrical mastermind, but his suave demeanor, packaged with a subtle melody, can make a seemingly random line stick in your head for the next 24 hours. Even beyond the first couple of words, “Pinging (6 Figures)” is filled with these earworm moments.
