If you’re looking for a reliable guest feature, call G Herbo. It rarely feels like he’s just cashing a check. On “Wassup With Me,” Atlanta’s Yung Mal, formerly of a past iteration of Gucci’s Mane’s 1017 Records, taps the Chicago staple for a verse. “PTSD, but I’m G, so I heal from it/You can catch me where I B, I got real money/Independent, as you C, but got deal money,” raps Herb, doing that thing with the alphabet in his rhymes that’s always good for a cheap thrill. Whether it’s the way he says it or what he says, Herb’s lines are always memorable, including the one where he might be the first rapper to flex a Buick. On the other hand, Yung Mal is fine. He has this croaky delivery that’s interesting enough, and he picked out this twinkling KiidMaestro beat so he does have a solid ear for production. I’ve sat through much worse to get to a Herb verse before.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
